Realtime Quakes (2019)

Realtime Quakes is a real time visualization of earthquakes that are happening anywhere in the world.

See the artwork (live)

realtime quakes

As source it uses a live stream from the USGS (United States Geological Survey).

The actual quakes (from the last hour) are marked on a Google Map.
As soon as a new quake has been detected, the map updates itself and centers around this most recent quake.

The markers are color coded: the redder the marker the bigger the magnitude of the quake.

You need to be patient: on average the earthquakes happen every 6-15 minutes.

TwitCloud (2017-2019)

TwitCloud is a New (Social) Media Artwork by Rolf van Gelder

TwitCloud

TwitCloud is a live visualisation of what is going on in the world.

It uses a real-time Twitter API (‘twitter4J‘).

A random topic will be chosen from the top trending topics list.

It uses the trending topics from the following countries:
WORLD, US, NL, UK, DE, TR or RU.

Next, it will get the most recent tweets for the chosen random trending topic.

The text from the tweets will be split up in words and visualized in a so-called ‘word cloud‘.

TweetMood (2019)

TweetMood is an interactive New (Social) Media Artwork by Rolf van Gelder.

Enjoy the artwork here!

The artwork tries to determine, real-time, the current mood of the world.

For accomplishing that, it gets the latest tweets from Twitter (more or less at random) and have them classified by an Artificial Intelligence Model (ML5).

The AI model has been trained using 20,000 movie reviews.
Movies with a high rating are apparently ‘good’ (‘positive’); low ratings are ‘bad’ (‘negative’).

The tweets are ‘rated’ by the AI model. It returns a value that ranges from 0 to 999. 0 is very negative, 999 is very positive.

Based on that value, a happy or sad smiley is generated.

The images on the ‘ticker’ bar are the profile images of the ‘tweeter’.

The background color of the ‘ticker’ represents the ‘average mood’.

Technology

TweetMood has been written using P5JS.
It uses the CodeBird library for fetching the tweets and ML5 for the Artificial Intelligence model.

Enjoy the artwork!

Twosaic (2019)

Twosaic (‘Twitter Mosaic’) is an interactive New (Social) Media Artwork by Rolf van Gelder

Twosaic

Twosaic is a live visual animation of what is going on in the world.

It uses a real-time Twitter API (‘twitter4J‘).

A random topic will be chosen from the top trending topics list.

It uses the trending topics from the following countries:
WORLD, US, NL, UK, DE, TR or RU

Twosaic

In the tweets of the chosen topic it tries to find a ‘base image’, a suitable image to use in the artwork.

If a base image has been found, user avatars of the most recent tweets for that topic will be fetched

Then it generates a mosaic by rendering the base image with the avatar thumbnails.

It’s fully real-time: every new tweet that comes in for the chosen topic, will immediately be included in the mosaic.

The text of the new incoming tweets will be shown in a scrolling ‘ticker’.

Realtime History (2018)

‘Realtime History’ is a New Media Artwork by Rolf van Gelder.

Realtime History v1.0
Realtime History v1.0

It’s a work about aging and memories.

Live camera captures are being time lapsed in real-time.

The software selects a pixel at random and replaces it with the current capture pixel at the same location.

So, it constantly mixes the current image with the past images, which generates the feeling of real-time aging.

During the animation, sounds are generated, based on the pixels being updated.

#loveU #hateU (2017)

#loveU #hateU is a New (Social) Media Artwork by Jana Astanov & Rolf van Gelder

#loveu #hateu
#loveu #hateu

#loveU #hateU is a live Twitter feed, showing all tweets with the hashtags #loveU or #hateU.

It’s roulating the tweets in the grid: a new tweet will be added in the upper left corner, the tweet in the lower right corner (= oldest tweet) will disappear.

The tweeter, the time stamp of the tweet, the geographical location (if available) and the actual tweet are shown.

It tries to prove love is still stronger than hatred… (we hope that’s still the case!)

The second component of this art project is the ‘#loveU2 BOT’.

#loveU2 BOT

Every tweet containing one of the two hashtags (#loveU or #hateU) will get a tweet back:

#loveU‘ tweets will get a tweet with the hashtag ‘#loveU2‘ and an attached image.

#hateU‘ tweets will get a tweet with the hashtags ‘#dontHateU‘ and ‘#loveU2‘ with a different attached image.

Version 4.0 of the SjansMachine has one major difference compared to version 3.0:
The photo booth has been replaced by smartphone- / tablet-‘selfies‘.

The visitors can use their own smartphone or tablet to make a ‘selfie’ of themself. After cropping the image and selecting a category (‘BRILLIANT ARTIST‘, ‘ÜBER GEEK‘, ‘CURIOUS RESEARCHER‘, ‘GENIUS ENGINEER‘, ‘SERIOUS DESIGNER‘ or ‘MAD SCIENTIST‘) their photo will show up on the SjansMachine wall and can be matched with one of the other visitors.
